In the 5th century, King Kashyapa offered 'piles of gold' to monks who would move off Sigiriya rock fortress to a nearby ancient volcanic rock.
And that's how the word 'Pidu-ran-gala', literally 'piles of gold rock' got its name.
At sunrise and sunset it's bathed in a golden hue, not for us this wet January morning.
Instead, we got lashing rain, nature in full force, a slippery strenuous ascent and finally, a view that rewards only those deeply in love enough to climb a little closer to their bliss.
